Everything to Know About Gutter Guards

Gutters are a great protection system for residential and commercial buildings. They help countless people save thousands of dollars each year by preventing water damage to their properties. As great as they are, eavestroughs need yearly maintenance to ensure they function properly. Gutters are known to get clogged, especially in areas populated with trees. Falling leaves and twigs find their way into eavestrough systems and block the water flow. This leads to water overflowing onto your property which can potentially result in mold growth or foundation problems to your property.

To fix this common problem, gutter guard systems were made. Gutter guards, also known as leaf guards or gutter covers, use a patented peri-flow filtration system to drain rain water while keeping all other debris out of the gutters. The leaves and debris on top are then dried by air circulation from above and below, allowing them to blow away in the wind. Leaf guards are an excellent choice for any climate and practically any style of home.

Types of Gutter Guard Materials

The three most common types of materials used for gutter guards are aluminum, metal or nylon mesh, and plastic. Other gutter cover materials include steel, vinyl, and cooper. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages, so be sure to do your research before installing one on your home. Aluminum and mesh outlast plastic, but aluminium is lightweight and prone to movement in the wind, and mesh requires more upkeep.

Gutter Cover Cleaning

Even though your gutter system has gutter covers, they still need to be cleaned. We recommend cleaning your gutter covers at least twice a year. We also advise that every two years, you remove your gutter guard and thoroughly clean out your eavestrough. As effective as leaf guards are, sometimes pine needles or other small debris will make their way through the cover. Taking the system apart every two years will ensure they are working properly, increase the lifespan of your eavestroughs, and save you money in the long run.

Residential Leaf Guard Installation

When it comes to residential leaf guard installation, an average home (a small to medium-sized single-story home or small townhome) will typically take 1 – 4 hours. Larger homes (over 3,000 square feet or with a steep roof) take between 3 and 8 hours. Gutter guard installation is not a complex job, but it’s always best to leave it up to the professionals. A&K Gutter has all the proper equipment and tools to securely install leaf guard systems.
